AirTag cannot connect? 6 common reasons and solutions

AirTag is a Bluetooth tracker launched by Apple that can help users locate daily items such as keys, wallets, backpacks, etc. However, some users may encounter the problem that AirTag cannot connect or pair with an iPhone in actual use. This article will summarize the 6 most common reasons and provide corresponding solutions to help you quickly troubleshoot and resume use.

1. Bluetooth is not turned on or invalid

Problem description: AirTag relies on Bluetooth to establish an initial connection with the iPhone. If Bluetooth is not turned on, AirTag will not be discovered.
Solution:
  • Open "Settings > Bluetooth" and make sure it is turned on,
  • You can try to turn Bluetooth off and then turn it back on, or restart the phone to refresh the system status.
  • Make sure the phone is not in airplane mode and there are not too many Bluetooth devices connected to interfere with the signal.

2.Location service is not turned on

Problem description: Although pairing relies on Bluetooth, AirTag's location update depends on location service support. If the "Find" app is not authorized to obtain the location, AirTag will not display the location or become invalid.
Solution:
  • Go to "Settings > Privacy and Security > Location Services" and make sure positioning is turned on;
  • Swipe down to find "Find" and set the permission to "While Using the App" or "Always";
  • Turn on "Precise Location" to enable the ultra-wideband (UWB) precise search function (only supports iPhone 11 and above).

3.The iOS system version is too low

Problem description: AirTag requires iOS 14.5 at the minimum. If the mobile phone system is too old, AirTag cannot be recognized or paired.
Solution:
  • Open "Settings > General > Software Update" to check and upgrade to the latest system;
  • If the device does not support iOS 14.5 or above (such as iPhone 6 and below), AirTag will not be able to use it.

4.The battery is exhausted or not installed correctly

Problem description: AirTag uses CR2032 button batteries, which can generally be used for about 1 year. Exhaustion of power or poor battery contact will cause AirTag to be unable to connect.
Solution:
  • Unscrew the metal cover on the back and replace the new CR2032 battery;
  • Make sure the positive and negative poles of the battery are in the correct direction when inserting, and hear the prompt tone;
  • Avoid using batteries with bitter coating, which may cause poor contact (Apple official reminder).

5.Find network or iCloud settings are wrong

Problem description: If the Apple ID is not logged in on the iPhone, or "Find My iPhone" is not turned on, AirTag will not be able to use the Find My network.
Solution:
  • Go to "Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Find", turn on "Find My iPhone" and "Find Network";
  • Make sure the device is logged in to a valid Apple ID and turn on "iCloud Keychain";
  • Check whether the mobile network connection is stable (Wi-Fi or cellular data).

6.AirTag has been bound to other accounts

Problem description: Each AirTag is bound to the Apple ID that was paired for the first time. If you buy a second-hand AirTag or a device given by someone else, the original owner must first remove the binding.
Solution:
  • Ask the original owner to enter the "Find" app, click on the AirTag, scroll down and select "Remove Item";
  • If you cannot contact the original owner, you can manually reset the AirTag:
  • Remove the battery cover and take out the battery;
  • Repeat and remove the battery 5 times (press and hold each time until you hear a prompt tone);
  • A different sound effect for the 5th time indicates a successful reset;
  • After reinstalling the battery cover, pair it with your iPhone at close range.

Summary

The reasons why AirTag cannot connect are mostly concentrated on basic issues such as Bluetooth, positioning, battery or account settings. Through the six troubleshooting methods provided in this article, most users can restore normal use by themselves.
